Description

Manhattan College professor and historian Adam Arenson’s beautifully illustrated book is a comprehensive study of the unique relationship of Home Savings and Loan founder Howard Ahmanson and artist Millard Sheets and his studio of craftsman.  For those in Southern California the unique designs of these iconic commercial buildings is a reminder of their significance as both local businesses and community architectural pride of the Mid-20th Century.

San Diego native Arenson’s interest in the subject dates back to his childhood visits to Grossmont Center that passed by La Mesa’s Home Savings Grossmont Branch at 5300 Jackson Drive.  The California-history inspired tile mosaic murals are still intact today on the building that now houses the JCS Innovation Charter School.
